Timbuwara This is an early Timbuwara from the Pangia area in the southern highlands of New Guinea. It comes from the collection of Todd Barlin, Sydney. According to Anthony Meyer, the information we have about these abstract figures is rather mixed. On the one hand, they are supposed to have been attached to the entrance of the men's house as a guardian spirit, but on the other hand, there are indications that they were carried on the head during fertility rites. Third, they are said to have embodied the deceased wife of the man and been kept in the men's house so that friends and relatives could pay you their respects. Ca 1960s or 1970s, 88 cm high, 94 cm wide.
